As the United States pulls out of the Paris Accords, preparing to abandon the planet-wide green energy push, other major nations around the world are stepping up their renewable energy game. India has been one of the global leaders in green technology for years now, from building the world's largest solar panel, to creating solar canals, to an airport that runs entirely on solar power. Now, India's government has announced a plan to convert India's major ports to run on renewable energy.

The Economic Times reports that the government will install 200 megawatt solar and wind farms at Indian ports by 2019. Most of the energy generated will come from solar—75 percent—while the rest of the energy will come from wind farms. If this plan works, the capacity could rise to 500 megawatts in a few years.
"These renewable energy projects will help in the reduction of carbon emission and lead to improvement of environment around the ports," a government official told the Economic Times. "All our ports are cash-rich. The ports have started the process of setting up renewable energy projects from profits."
The project is estimated to cost about $77 million, which seems like a lot, but considering that the Indian government's budget for 2017 was about $366 billion, it seems like a worthy investment.
